Health Matters

At some point last year I came to the realization that I have to live forever. Well, maybe not forever, but at least as long as Lennon.

Morbid thought, I know.

But the reality is, he is likely going to need 24-hour care for his entire life. Sure, he’s making progress, he’s learning ways to communicate, but it’s not enough. And I know way to much about group homes and assisted living places to trust them with his care when I’m gone.

So, that’s it.

I have to live forever.

While I am well aware it’s not the end-all, be-all of measuring health, I have found myself listed as OBESE on the BMI index. To make my way to HEALTHY I need to lose 40 pounds.

40 freaking pounds. That’s what Lennon weighs!

Honestly, I’m not sure if that’s possible, but on February 5th I decided I was going to shift that mentality and JUST DO IT.

If you know me, you know that soda is my drink of choice and I live on fast food and take out. This wasn’t going to be an easy transition. And I’ll probably lose my way plenty.

Side note: It’s times like these when I really miss having my sister around. She’s a professional dancer and I know she would keep me on track. Heck, she would meal prep for me and smack every soda I picked up right out of my hand.

On February 5th I decided to join Beachbody – a $150 investment to receive a year’s subscription to their workout videos, two months worth of Shakeology, early access to Barre Blend (the workout I knew would be the perfect fit to get me started) and, through my coach Ashley, access to a virtual fit club.

Since that day nearly a month ago I have lost 10 pounds, had only 2 or 3 sodas, and eaten fast food a handful of times. It’s not perfect, but IT IS an improvement, and that’s really all I can ask for at this point. I’ve tried my hardest to be consistent with the Barre Blend workouts and started going on walks with Kenny and Lennon twice a week. I still attend Body Ignite through Fit4Mom (which I love) once a week as well.

In the virtual fit club we were assigned teams – I was lucky enough to find myself in a group of three absolutely amazing women – Natasha, Christina & Danielle. Teams were tasked with selecting an emoji to represent them in the group. Ours? 🐘 The elephant 🐘 The elephant was chosen based on the support they give to women in their tribe in their moment of need.

When one pregnant elephant was about to give birth, her herd put their lives on the line! They formed a circle around the mother in labor, shielding her from prowling lions and hyenas. When an animal gives birth, it becomes very vulnerable. Not only that, but the baby needs to be protected, too! That’s why it’s this family’s natural instinct to form a circle around their loved ones in need.

I honestly think a major part of my success this far has been due to having these women (virtually) by my side. They hold me accountable and raise me up when I struggle. They empathize with my struggles and we problem solve together on ways to improve our situations. As the current fit club comes to a close one of my teammates, Christina, sent me a heart felt note and a “Good Luck Elephant” from Kenya, where her husband was on a mission trip. That is how powerful these relationships grew to be.

I’m sad that in March I will be assigned a new team, but so excited for the women who will get to work with Danielle, Christina & Natasha next. Plus, we’ve all already decided that we have each other’s backs for the long haul and our group chat will continue indefinitely πŸ’—


Things I’m working on:

  • Water intake!
  • Consistency – if you remember I decided this was my word of the year!
  • Meal planning & prep!

In the meantime I’m going to try my hardest to smile my way through struggles and challenges, to just be happy and recognize that each obstacle I face is only temporary. I’m going to post the pictures where I’m smiling ear to ear and not give a flying f*ck if you can see my bonus chin or muffin top. Heck, I’m even going to start taking pictures & selfies straight on, no downward angles to make me look slimmer necessary! I’m going to put myself out there without fear of being judged because the people that matter most to me don’t judge. And I’m going to love on myself and appreciate what I have to offer the world around me.
