A Good Night’s Sleep

I don’t know what it is, but it seems as though a lot of the kiddos with autism I know or hear about absolutely suck at sleeping.

Lennon is no different.

We average four, maybe five (if we’re lucky) hours a night.

We have tried it all:

  • diet changes
  • more clothes / less clothes
  • temperature changes
  • no TV before bedtime
  • melatonin
  • calming activities / wear him out activities
  • co-sleeping / him in his own room
  • with the pets / without the pets

Nothing seems to make a difference, it’s a complete crap shoot and there is no way to predict how the night is going to go.

However, there is one thing that we think has an impact. When daddy goes out of town or falls asleep on the couch watching TV and it’s just mommy and Lennon he tends to go down quicker and stay out for longer.

Last week when Kenny was gone on a business trip we got the best sleep we’ve had in months – I’m talking six or seven hours (not counting one night where Lennon got sick and spent the evening vomiting on me and soaking in the bathtub). And because of that week’s success Kenny has been intentionally sleeping downstairs. We are averaging eight hours a night this week folks!

And I say we because when I put him down I almost always fall asleep right along with him – doesn’t matter if it’s 7- or 8-o’clock.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still absolutely exhausted, but this is progress.

And if this is the result, Kenny is going to be sleeping on that couch for months to come!
